Not long ago, one of these late-summer evenings, a very good friend of mine asked me on the balcony under these stars: “So, where are you? If it be a question of choice now: Roots...or Wings?”
An old and worthwile question always over...both impulses seem to be deeply interwoven in us since aeons as a vital driving force in the game of life. In reoccuring spirals we always face new aspects.
Are they opposites? Antagonisms?
In the last weeks of fall, as the energy of the plant-world is drawing back concentrating in the underground root-system and the migratory birds simultanuously gather for their wonderously guided wanderings....I noticed...that both motives are deeply inbedded in the paintings that appeared these last years.
They often resemble symbolic upper- and underworld aspects of a yearning for and communion with grounded re-related depth: Soul. And yet weightless, dream-driven, floating intuition: Spirit!
Our life discribes an oscillation of both impulses. Both move us like mysterious tides. They are real and deeply inbedded in our psyche. Well...we are no isolated unities or species as such, how could that be, dispite our dominance and unique self-referenciality. We are made of the same substance and feed from the same wells and fields like all that spreads roots and grows feathers. Root and bone I say, feather and stone.
Deeply felt community and humble emotional relation have always sustained the web of life. The More-than-human world, the Other, is so close, the veil is thin as the air that moves between life and death, it starts as close as the surface of our skin and within, reverberates, gathers our attention, seeps in with breath and with color and sound. The elements ahh...ubiquitous in each revelation of life. Micro-and Macrocosm, they encounter us in all this pattern language that is dealing with anything but words: just beauty and mysterious goose-bump meaning!
Diversity is the key to retain. If awe, wonder, kindness and compassion for this Other-ness of all creation and the entirety of our kin thrive...we take it in our hand.
Roots and Wings, may these paintings celebrate our mysterious bond with this wild animate world.
All paintings Acrylic/mixed Media on Canvas.
